The Mandarin Flame

Spessartite is an orange variety of garnet, coloured by manganese and found in Brazil, Nigeria, Namibia and Tanzania. Its finest expression, known as Mandarin garnet, is prized for its exceptionally vivid, pure orange. Discovered in the Spessart Mountains of Germany, the mineral later gained recognition through striking deposits in Namibia. Fine, intensely saturated stones remain sought after for their rarity and brilliance.

First called Hollandine, after the Dutch House of Orange, this rare garnet carries a name born of royal colour.

Pairings and Cuts

Yellow gold intensifies its fiery warmth, while white gold and platinum create a striking contrast. Rose gold lends softer, copper-toned depth. Pair spessartite with diamonds for brilliance, emeralds for a vivid complementary contrast or blue sapphires for dramatic colour play. Brilliant cuts maximise sparkle, while cushion and oval cuts showcase its rich colour. With a hardness of 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, it suits many jewellery designs, including rings with protective settings.

The Living Ember

Spessartite ranges from golden orange and burnt amber to the vivid, almost incandescent orange of Mandarin garnet. Its colour comes from its natural mineral composition, with subtle variations creating individual character. Mandarin garnet is a trade name for the most desirable bright-orange expression, rather than a separate gemstone species. Look for lively colour, good transparency and minimal brown undertones when choosing a stone.
